New Orleans Child Custody & Visitation Attorneys

Aggressive Advocates, Compassionate Counsel

Decisions that involve child custody and visitation are some of the most difficult choices that separating couples have to make. In the big picture, these choices are also the most important. Unfortunately, charged emotions that often accompany the end of relationships and different yet sincerely-held beliefs about what's best for children can make it difficult for divorcing spouses and unmarried parents to find common ground.

Our New Orleans family attorneys understand this struggle. At Scott, Vicknair, Hair & Checki, LLC, we strive to provide effective representation for every client, mothers and fathers alike, and to achieve solutions that benefit both our clients and the children who are most affected by these decisions. We encourage you to contact us today.

Helping Families Throughout Louisiana

Whether your case is agreed upon out of court or goes to trial, our team can help:

  • Experienced negotiators - In general, it's always better if parents can reach a mutual agreement on custody and visitation rather than leaving those profoundly important decisions to a judge. Our experience, objectivity, and resourcefulness have helped many previous clients do this and can benefit you as well.
  • Trial attorneys - If attempts to reach an out-of-court solution are not successful, however, our attorneys can protect your interests in litigation. We are prepared to aggressively seek a custody order from the court that meets your goals.

Louisiana's Child Custody Factors

How would a judge determine what's in the best interests of your children if the case has to go to court? Louisiana's child custody statute provides that the "court shall consider all relevant factors in determining the best interest of the child." The statute goes on to list 12 specific factors, but does not limit the court's discretion to consider other relevant factors or give more weight to some than others.

In essence, this is a tricky balancing test that varies from case to case. Our experience and familiarity with the family courts in Orleans Parish and surrounding areas of southeast Louisiana are particularly helpful here, enabling us to account for a wider range of variables in crafting effective arguments.
